Book Review, Guest Post, & Giveaway of Forbidden Promises

GUEST POST:

All of Katee Roberts favorite things about Jude MacNamara

Jude MacNamara was a surprise right from the beginning. I knew he was the final surviving member of the MacNamara clan, and that he’s made it his life’s mission to snuff out the Sheridan family the same way his was killed. But beyond that? I got to know him as the story progressed.

I really can’t put into words how different Jude is from my other heroes. He’s so…unrepentant. I seriously spent most of the book muttering under my breath at him. “Jude, you CANNOT talk like that to Sloan. Jude, don’t you dare… You just went there. Damn it. JUDE, NO.” I joke that Jude acts as much like a Viking as he looks—he sees something he wants, and he takes it. Which is one of my favorite things about him.

But under that? I’m not going to say he has a soft gooey center, but there’s a thread of vulnerability because of his history. Everything he’s ever cared about was taken from him, so he’s built these walls around himself in order not to care at all. He moves in a world filled with predators, in which he’s the baddest one around, but when this slip of a woman wanders into his life, she sets him back on his heels in a way nothing has before that point.

I think THAT is my favorite thing about Jude—how he’s brought to his knees by Sloan, who is the most unassuming of the O’Malley siblings. Even as he’s frustrated with her quiet unwillingness to be steamrolled, he respects her strength and doesn’t want to crush it. And what they find together as a unit? That’s my favorite thing of all!

REVIEW:

Title: Forbidden Promises
Author: Katee Robert
Series: The O’Malleys (#4)
Publication Date: May 30, 2017

Synopsis: All Sloan O’Malley ever wanted was a simple life—and now she’s finally got it. She’s left everything behind in Boston—her family, her money, even her name—and set herself up in a tiny seaside town in Oregon. What she doesn’t plan for? Her mysterious and painfully attractive neighbor, Jude.

Jude MacNamara has been many things in his life—pampered son of a prestigious family, only surviving heir to a lost legacy, hit man—but now he’s out for revenge on the man responsible for the death of his father and brothers—Colm Sheridan. He’s tracking Colm’s sister when he encounters Sloan living with her in her beach house. He’s a patient hunter and he’s willing to sit back and wait for his prey…he just doesn’t expect for this woman to give rise to emotions he hasn’t felt in years.

He doesn’t want to see Sloan hurt, but in order to protect her, he will have to turn his back on the one thing he’s spent his life pursuing—revenge. Even then, there’s no guarantee either one of them will make it out alive.

Review:

CHARACTERS:

Sloan’s book is one I’ve been wanting since we first met her. The fact that she was quieter and more solitary/introverted compared to her siblings really intrigued me. I felt like I had more in common with her than I did the others, and I was right, I do. She is amazing, and I love her. She is definitely my second favorite O’Malley (Aiden will always be my boo and #1).

I did get less excited for this book when I read excerpts that Katee posted because of Jude. I wasn’t too fond of how aggressive/possessive he was coming off in the short parts she was showing. BUT when I got to know him in the book I started to come around to him, those short parts that were shared are NOTHING like how Jude really is, and they really didn’t show Sloan either.

PLOT:

This was one of the more interesting O’Malley books because it took place out of Boston, I was a bit sad during the book because I missed my other O’Malley’s, but Katee did eventually switch the POV’s to give me them (setting us up for the other books) but I would have loved my other O’Malleys around more. But Sloan really needed this environment to come into her own. Other than that, it’s got all the elements of a great romance novel, and Katee always does them right.

WORLDBUILDING:

Seriously this is one of my favorite romance series. They can be read out of order or individually BUT there is a huge continuing plot that over arcs the series and I, personally, suggest reading them in order. You will definitely thank me for doing so and you will not regret it!

OVERALL:

I loved it! I went into with an ‘eh’ feeling because of a character but came out loving it. I really should know better by now than to doubt Katee!

Stars: ★★★★★
Recommendation: Yes

I received an ARC of this book from Barclay Publishing. This in no way affected my review.
